Caldera
Living along the Ring of Fire, the mountains surrounding me provide beautiful wilderness to explore and backdrop to my view when at home, but a menace lurks underneath their towering stability. Molten rock slides through passages deep within the earth, forced through the surface when constrained.
Volcanoes are as much about creation as they are destruction. They offer a symbolism rich in meaning about the cycle of transformation. Unseen movement, growth, emergence, explosion. Rebirth.
Calderas are what are left after the collapse of the surrounding magma plug. Frequently forming islands in crater lakes, they are a constant reminder of the activity which formed the surrounding mountain or island.
“Caldera” was created for a commission from the Oregon College of Art & Craft for their “Art on the Vine” auction in 2005. Die-formed 14k yellow gold and sterling silver bimetal and 14k yellow gold were combined in this reversible necklace and earring set. Featuring Tahitian black pearls, the necklace is mounted on a 14k yellow gold handmade Chris&srquo; cable.
